Saints Cyril & Methodius Pastoral Council
Minutes of January 28, 2009
Church Rectory, 6:30 p.m.
Larry Zembala, co-chair, opened the meeting with Father Terry saying a prayer. Members in attendance were: Larry, Father, Joe Smolek, Roger Chaffins, Laura Sharkozy, Rachel Back, Barbara Patterson, Candice Vanwaardenburg, Ben Morey, and Joan Haugh.
Minutes of the November 13, 2008 meeting were approved as read. It was suggested that the minutes be emailed to Rich Akers so he can post on the church’s website and to Kay Reimbold who will make about 25 copies available in the rear of church for those persons interested.
Introductions were made; new members for 2009 include Bob Alva, Pat and Candice Vanwaardenburg, Joe Smolek, Rachel Back and Barbara Patterson.
Diocesan Affairs – Directors and Officers insurance was discussed; the consensus was that we will opt out unless the Diocese is willing to cover the expense.
Protocol for Meetings – The Robert’s Rules of Order will be followed. Other concerns were that issues need to be settled as soon as possible and not always wait until the Council meets. If someone has an individual or issue concern, they need to address the person that it involves on a one-to-one basis, and if not settled, then they may contact the Parish Council chairperson. The Parish Council’s function is not to be resolving complaints, but to assess needs and be sure the church’s needs are being met.
The following bears repeating, an excerpt from the September 11, 2008 minutes: “It was agreed that non-members wishing to address the Council should make a prior request to the pastor or chairman of the Council. Two observers will be permitted at each session, and that observers shall not participate in the meeting unless requested to do so by the Parish Council chair or the pastor. If anyone wishes to address the Council, they need to ask to be placed on the agenda for the next scheduled meeting. Discussion is limited to ten-minutes and the Council will then take under advisement any suggestions.”
Parish Life – In the absence of the liaison, Father Terry summarized the planned activities: 1) SS Cyril and Methodius Feast Day will be celebrated with an Ethnic carry-in on the 15th of February, Sunday, at noon. The older youth will be asked to serve and clean up and perhaps the religious education classes can put on a skit. Amy Morey and Candice Vanwaardenburg will work on a skit presentation. 2) Parish picnic will be on a Saturday, August 22, at 4:00 p.m. 3) Seniors’ club and Grief Support Ministry were suggested ideas for the Parish.
Liturgy/Worship – The Commission is making plans for Lenten Soup luncheon with a speaker. Father Terry said the daily Lenten reflections books (black books) are now available; we will request a $1.00 per book. The Advent books seemed to be well accepted.
Stewardship – Commission will be meeting Friday.
Education/Formation – Laura Sharkozy is making plans for the Confirmation class to attend the weekend retreat “Source and Summit” April 24-26th. They will be planning fund raising activities such as bake sale and carnation sales. Laura also informed the Council members that she has been emphasizing the need for children to attend Mass and class regularly. The Commission will meet February 9, 2009.
Social Justice/Peace – Joan thanked the parish and the Knights of Columbus for its support of the Right to Life ad in the Market and the Sanctity of Life program held January 18th in Knox. The St Vincent de Paul members are assisting households in need and collecting food for the Community Services of Starke County’s food pantry. At Christmas time, the angel tree donors helped 27 households (or 106 persons).
Council members inquired about who were the members of the Commissions. Father Terry presented the following names:
