May 13, 2009 Pastoral Council Minutes
The meeting was opened with prayer by Father Terry. Those in attendance included Larry Zembala, Father Terry Bennis, Patrick Vanwaardenburg, Rachel Back, Barbara Patterson, Margaret Razus, Bob Alva, Laura Sharkozy and Joan Haugh.
Minutes of the April 8, 2009 meeting were distributed and approved after minor name corrections.
Pastoral Council Membership – Father Terry and Larry Zembala received a letter of resignation from Carmen Haller. It was decided to wait until the next election to replace her.
Parish Life – Margaret Razus reported that the grief support and home visiting committee met and the senior activity was cancelled due to lack of interest.
Liturgy/Worship – Since Carmen has resigned, Father Terry will see if another member of the commission will act as liaison to the Pastoral Council. The May Crowning, First Communion and Holy Week services went very well.
Social Justice/Peace – Joan reported that information on the protest at the Notre Dame graduation was given to others who may consider attending the event. Also, St. Vincent de Paul Society will be holding its annual pork chop dinner from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on July 12th. Of interest to the parishioners would be the fact that as a result of the Operation Rice Bowl and Campaign for Human Development support from the Starke County parishes, the Community Services of Starke County has received a check for $3,000 for food for the pantry, and in the past, the Campaign for Human Development has provided matching funds for transportation program.
Education/Formation – Laura informed members that the last religious education class would be this weekend and that a Vacation Bible School will be held the week of July 20th from 6 to 8 p.m. The Source and Summit conference was well-received by the students that attended. The cost was about $35 per child for the registration, plus approximately $500 for lodging.
Father Terry is seeking volunteer help for the film festivals to be held Monday through Friday from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in the church parlor. The Knights of Columbus have offered to pay for the refreshments.
Father’s Day’s gift for Dads will be a flashlight on a key ring.
Stewardship – 1) Father reported the rummage sale netted over $700 and thanked the ladies for their hard work. 2) St. Matthias Parish in Crown Point is holding a huge rummage sale next weekend, and we may have any leftover items. But, we need men and trucks to pickup the goods on May 23, 2009. 3) The parish incurred a cost of $400 for the boiler repair, thanks to donations of $1,100 from individual parishioners. 4) Sealing of the church exterior will be tabled until next meeting. 5) Stained glass window in the side choir room is bulging; it will be repaired to secure it to prevent it from falling and breaking. 6) Patrick suggested we have a building/maintenance committee to oversee the facilities to insure preventative maintenance is being done, etc. 7) Copier donated to SSC&M needs cleaned; Joan will check with Anco to see if they would donate the cleaning. 8) Fund raising ideas included port-a-pit chicken sale, always having a bake sale when the Knights have a breakfast, car wash, and holding pancake breakfasts every other week with different groups assisting.
Meeting ended with prayer. Next meeting will be June 10, 6:30 p.m.
