Saints Cyril & Methodius Pastoral Council
Minutes of March 11, 2009
Church Rectory, 6:30 P.M.
Larry Zembala, acting chairperson, called the meeting to order with Father Terry saying a prayer. Members in attendance were; Larry, Father Terry, Joe Smolek, Roger Chaffins, Laura Sharkozy, Rachel Back, Barbara Patterson, Bob Alva, Pat Vanwaardenberg, Carmen Haller, and Margaret Razus.
Larry read a prepared statement requesting that due to busy personal schedules, meetings should try to last no longer than 60 minutes, if possible.
An inquiry was made as to the status of our parish’s savings held in trust by the diocease. Father Terry stated that he has been informed that Indiana Law protects our parish savings funds held in trust from being considered an asset of the diocease.
Parish Life– a report was given by Margaret. An outing for the newly formed senior group is being planned to the Hoosier Valley Railroad Center. A signup sheet will be available. Any needed transportation issues will be dealt with as signup progresses. Secondly, five persons have expressed interest in establishing the grief support ministry. Mary Ann and Jeff Boo may invite a grief counselor to meet with the group to advise them.
Liturgy Commission- Carmen reported on the ongoing Lenten Soup Dinner and movie following the Stations of the Cross. All Saints and Saint Cyril Liturgy Commissions will meet to discuss the collaborative schedule for Holy Week.
Stewardship Commission- Father Terry reported the boiler repair has concluded with the insurance settlement covering the cost of the repair less the $1,500.00 deductible. A rummage sale is scheduled for April 23rd, 24th, and 25th in the church basement.
Education Commission- Rachel reported that a candle sale is proceeding as a fundraiser for the Confirmation class. The attendance for Source and Summit on 4/24 and 4/25 is still undetermined, as is the cost. This commission will begin a video series on relevant moral/social issues for teens. This series will be previewed by parish members starting 4/30. A pancake breakfast is scheduled for 4/19 sponsored by the Knights of Columbus to raise funds for Source and Summit expenses. Susan Fields and Rachel will attend a liturgy and worship workshop at St. Mary’s in Crown Point.
Larry Zembala was nominated to be chairperson of the council and this was seconded by Joe Smolek. The council voted unanimously to confirm Larry as chairperson.
Addition concerns: The issue of the messages on the church sign was discussed. A suggestion was made that church related and/or spiritual messages be posted in the future. Bob Alva volunteered to keep the sign current.
Next meeting is scheduled for April 8th 2009 at 6:30 P.M.. Prayer and meeting adjourned at 7:25 P.M.
